Trainings and Workshops

Camping Course

This two day camping workshop teaches you the skills necessary to take youth on frontcountry camping trips also known as car camping. Front country camping is ideal for groups who are unable or don’t want to hike to a backcountry campsite. Much of the time, frontcountry sites offer access to bathrooms and a safe water supply. This workshop goes over the specifics of setting up a campsite, how to use our equipment, and how to engage your kids in various activities and team-building exercises. The Camping Workshops take place at Chilao Campground in the San Gabriel National Monument. The dates of this year’s training sessions are:

Wilderness Leadership Training (WLT)

The Wilderness Leadership training is a much more comprehensive training course. It is designed to give you the tools you need to plan and lead youth on multi-day backpacking adventures into backcountry wilderness spaces. After completing the course, you will gain full access to our Gear Library. The WLT consists of an all-day pre-trip meeting and five days of backpacking in the mountains. Each participant will take on the leadership role for at least one challenging scenario. We will debrief each scenario, allowing both leaders and participants to understand their successes and potential improvements of their scenario as well as the thoughts and emotions of each member of the group. The course curriculum includes: clothing requirements, nutrition, equipment use, map (and compass) reading, reasons to learn wilderness first aid, leadership styles, group dynamics and more. Role playing exercises give participants a realistic backcountry leadership experience. Food and transportation from the LAWT office is provided and no previous experience is necessary. WLT participants will meet in Los Angeles and drive to the southern Sierra Nevada mountains, just south of Mt. Whitney. This location is at 10,000 feet and above, so some physical training beforehand may be necessary. If you have any questions about this please email chelsealawt@gmail.com. The training sessions for the WLT are:

Mandatory Pre-trip Meeting: June 24 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

Trip: June 28 – July 2 from 7:00 am Wednesday to 7:00 pm Sunday

Mandatory Pre-trip Meeting: September 2 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

Instructor Retreat

Another bonus of attending our courses is that you are already half way to becoming a certified LAWT Instructor! Once you have completed a course, you are eligible to attend the free Instructor Retreat and learn the skills necessary to become a LAWT Instructor on the course that you took. LAWT Instructors lead the exercises during Training Sessions, have immediate access to the gear library, and play an integral role in our mission to get LA’s youth into nature. These retreats also offer the chance to gain deeper insight and experience into successful trip planning strategies from your fellow youth workers. The Instructor Retreat takes place at the Millard Campground in the San Gabriel National Monument. There are only 15 available spots for this trip, so be sure to register as soon as possible! LAWT Instructors will be awarded a small stipend for every trip they lead ranging from $25-$200.

Mandatory Pre-trip Meeting: Thursday, March 14th @ 6:30pm at the Stronghold Climbing Gym

Trip: March 18th & 19th

If you plan on taking a LAWT Course, we do not cover first aid.

If you will be more than 2 hours from medical care, it is required that at least one group leader has taken a Wilderness First Aid course to use our gear. LAWT does not yet offer this course, and you will have to take it through a third party institution such as NOLS or REI. Wilderness First Aid Courses can range from 2-10 days depending on how thorough of a training your organization prefers.
